The answer to this question lays largely on what land we end up with. The zoning that it is in, preexisting structures, access to resources etc. will all determine what we are able to do with it.
The original group of friends that have been discussing this idea started with the concept of getting land and sub dividing it into individual parcels owned by each household with a central communal area to be enjoyed by all such as event space, workshop, out door kitchen, communal garden, etc. This idea is still an option however based on our research and in the Pacific NW in particular this is a very costly option. It involves building all of the shared communal spaces, as well as each households home, roads, septic etc. The cost could be lower if we formed a non-profit and accepted government grants and affordable housing subsidies, or as high as $800K/ person if we fund it privately. Most Pacific NW IC's bring in developers as they can't compete with the cost. This makes it very unreachable for most of our friends and community members in need of secure and affordable housing. Which led us to the idea of buying a school. There are lots of schools for sale but one that stuck on in particularly was previously used a Korean Boarding School. The ideal size for an intentional community is 15-20 households and this would be able to provide housing for that. It has 8 buildings including 4 houses, 1 gymnasium 1 school, and 2 dormitories buildings totalling 32 bedrooms between them. It has 900 SQ ft of lake front and is 16 acres in total. There would be lots of room for livestock, gardens and food forests. The idea would be that we could live in the existing houses, build our own, trailers etc. so we each have our own house oppose to co-housing. We should share co-creative spaces such as; commercial kitchen, art room, music room, library, woodworking workshop, mechanic shop, etc. We could have weekly or monthly farmers markets out of the stores on site. Events out of the gymnasium. Workshops out of the school. Retreats and healing centres out of the dorm rooms. There is A LOT of potential in this $4.4 Million Dollar property that we could split between maybe 10 households to start or 20 down the road. That would break down to $220 000-440 000/ household and that is if we choose to privately fund it. There is a way to have this be 100% funded and we would just get to be the paid employees of this property. All of these options are things to be decided upon by the Intentional Community together. With that said there is a base foundation of the direction/ inspiration for this community under the Vision Topic as people need some idea of what it is that they are joining and what direction it is going in. Please comment with any ideas, suggestions, connections, experience or information regarding potential structures for this Intentional Community ex. Non-Profit, Society, School, etc. |
